An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built directly into your device. It performs the same function as a traditional physical SIM card, but without requiring a removable card.
Instead of inserting a plastic SIM, you download a mobile plan onto your device electronically.
Most modern smartphones, tablets, and some smartwatches support eSIM technology.
How does an eSIM work?
An eSIM allows your device to connect to a mobile network using software rather than a physical SIM card.
When you purchase an eSIM plan:
- You receive installation details (usually via QR code or manual entry).
- You log in to your Simify app to install the plan on your device.
- You complete activation by landing in a covered country and adjusting your phone’s settings.
- Once activated, your device connects to a supported mobile network in your destination.
Activation typically occurs when:
- You are in a covered country
- The eSIM is turned on and assigned to use mobile data
- Data roaming is enabled
How is it different from a physical SIM?
A traditional SIM card must be inserted into your device and manually swapped when changing carriers or countries.
An eSIM:
- Is already embedded in the device
- Does not require physical handling
- Can be installed before travel
This makes it especially useful for international travel or using multiple mobile plans on one device.
DO I need to remove my regular SIM?
No.
You can keep your physical SIM active and use your eSIM for data. Most devices allow you to manage both lines separately.
What should I check before buying an eSIM?
Before purchasing, confirm:
- Your device supports eSIM
- Your device is carrier-unlocked
- Your destination is covered by the plan
