How Do I Make Calls and Texts Without Roaming Fees?

All Simify eSIMs are data-only. That means traditional calls and SMS aren’t included, but we can still call and message while traveling without roaming fees by using data instead.

What you need to know

Because Simify eSIMs are data-only:

  • Carrier calls and SMS aren’t included
  • Calling and messaging happen through apps that use data

You can always see this on the plan details page under Calls & Texts. With that in mind, these are the most common ways travelers stay connected.

Calling and messaging friends and family

The easiest way to call and message for free while overseas is to use apps that work over the internet. These include:

  • WhatsApp
  • FaceTime
  • iMessage
  • Other messaging or social apps that use data

As long as there’s an internet connection—either Wi-Fi or the Simify eSIM—these apps work normally and don’t trigger roaming charges. This is how most travelers stay in touch.

Calling local businesses or international numbers

To call hotels, restaurants, or international numbers while abroad, we can use VoIP calling apps. These apps place calls over the internet instead of a carrier network.

Common options include:

  • Viber
  • WhatsApp
  • Telegram
  • Signal
  • Other VoIP services

These typically require:

  • An internet connection (Wi-Fi or Simify eSIM data)
  • A small amount of prepaid credit, depending on the service

Calls made this way don’t incur roaming charges from the home carrier.
